Two Coffee Negroni cocktails with orange twist garnish, served on slate with dark chocolate

Just when you think the Negroni can’t get any more versatile, along comes the Coffee Negroni! That’s right, it’s a meeting of giants as the world’s favourite morning drink collides with the world’s favourite afternoon cocktail. In this luxurious union, expect a veritable fireworks show of flavour that encompasses the full range of your tastebuds.

The Negroni follows the classic equal-parts ratio, but the kicker is that it’s filtered through freshly ground coffee. This fresh filtration infuses the cocktail with roasted notes of dark chocolate, fruit, and nuts. The fresh coffee flavours blend seamlessly with the bitter Campari, herbal gin, and wooded spice flavours of the vermouth. It can either shine as an aperitivo cocktail or be a fitting end to a great night out.

How was the Coffee Negroni invented?

While the exact origin story of the Coffee Negroni might be a bit elusive, the inspiration is clear: combining two beloved rituals—coffee breaks and cocktail hours. Bartenders and coffee enthusiasts have been experimenting with coffee-flavoured cocktails for years, but it was only a matter of time before someone infused the iconic Negroni with the deep, rich essence of coffee.

Mixologists often attribute this twist to their quest to provide their patrons with a distinctive, bittersweet flavour profile that captivates the senses from the initial sip. It’s a perfect example of how traditional cocktails can be transformed with a creative touch.

Choosing the best coffee for your Coffee Negroni

The type of coffee you use can make a big difference in your Coffee Negroni. We recommend using freshly ground, high-quality beans with bold flavours that complement the bitter and herbal notes of Campari and gin. Look for coffee with tasting notes of chocolate, nuts, or dark berries for an added layer of complexity.

You can experiment with different roasts, but a medium to dark roast generally works best as it provides a rich, intense flavour that doesn’t get overshadowed by the other strong ingredients. Freshly ground coffee will always enhance the aromatic profile of the cocktail, offering a more authentic experience.

Can I use coffee liqueur instead of fresh coffee?

If you don’t have freshly ground coffee on hand or prefer a shortcut, you might consider using a coffee liqueur. While it won’t give you the exact same depth as freshly ground coffee, it still delivers a nice coffee flavour with added sweetness.

Consider using a liqueur that balances well with the herbal and bitter notes of Campari, to ensure a harmonious blend. Keep in mind, though, that using a liqueur will slightly change the balance of flavours, making the drink a bit sweeter. You can adjust the gin and vermouth accordingly to find your preferred balance.

Pairing your Coffee Negroni with food

This cocktail’s robust and aromatic qualities make it a great companion for various food pairings. Pair it with dark chocolate desserts, such as a flourless chocolate cake or chocolate truffles. The bittersweet flavour of the Coffee Negroni complements the richness of chocolate perfectly.

For savoury options, consider small bites like prosciutto-wrapped dates, which offer a sweet and salty contrast, or a charcuterie board with aged cheeses and nuts.

Coffee Negroni variations to try

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are plenty of ways to experiment with the Coffee Negroni. For a smoother, creamier texture, try adding a splash of sweet vermouth. Another option is to experiment with different types of gin. Consider using Bulldog Gin, known for its balance of botanicals that work beautifully with coffee notes, bringing out new flavours. If you’re a fan of smoky notes, substitute regular vermouth with a barrel-aged version, adding a whole new dimension to your cocktail.
