Close up shot of a Pornstar Martini with passionfruit garnish

This Pornstar Martini with Gin recipe is a delightful spin-off of the original that takes this tongue-in-cheek drink into a juniper-tinged, herbaceous space. First poured with vanilla vodka as its base by a cheeky noughties’ bartender in the early 2000s, this flirty cocktail is a theatrical drink that is nonetheless easier to pour than it might look.

Here is your step-by-step guide to shaking up a passionfruit gin martini at home.

Does passion fruit go well with gin

Ever since gin was first invented, this singular spirit has been roped in as the backbone of countless classic mixed drinks, from summer gin cocktails, to winter gin cocktails and everything in between. It pairs especially well with fruity flavours, perhaps because the juniper berries that provide its unique taste are so fresh, woodsy and green.

The flavour of passion fruit walks the fine line between sweet and tart and has an undeniable tropical vibe to it. We love the combination of passion fruit and a London Dry gin like Bulldog Gin because these flavours backfill one another in the most unexpected way – the green notes of the gin sidle up against the amethyst-hued aromas of the granadilla to come together in a lively, flirtatious cha-cha-cha.

What other fruit can you add to gin

We would go as far as to say that pretty much any fruit pairs well with gin, but there are certain fruity flavours that just really go above and beyond to create something truly special.

The gorgeous Strawberry Basil cocktail always transports us to early summer picnics in a sunny field, rich with strawberry bushes and fresh green herbs. Then there is also the Gin Bramble, with its notes of jammy sweet blackberries. Not to mention the oh-so-summery Watermelon Gin cocktail, of course!

How to make a Pink Gin Pornstar Martini

Keen to lean into the girlish vibe that underpins the Pornstar Martini even more? We double-dare you to opt for a pink gin. Typically pink gin is a dry gin flavoured or infused with red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries or rhubarb. This innovative take on the classic gin profile will take your Pornstar Martini with Gin into an altogether more floral space – perfect for everything from hen dos, to garden parties, and more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Douglas Ankrah, mixologist, bar consultant and co-founder of the LAB (London Academy of Bartenders) created the cocktail in the early 2000s in London. He named it as such because the drink was inspired by the perfume of a dancer, and he thought it was what a pornstar would order.

It's up to you, but purists say you should scoop out and eat the passionfruit garnish, drink the Prosecco, then sip the cocktail at your leisure.

Passionfruit can be combined with gin to make a flirty, tropical Pornstar Martini with Gin.
